Under The Surface

My Process

In this piece I explored the ideas of duality - light and dark, pleasant and unpleasant, now and then. The film keeps a sense of time although whether this is the future, present or past is up to the interpretation of the audience. The narrative is also left purposefully abstract so that audience may be able to more freely empathize with it.

00 abstract

Duality; Emotion as turbulence and tranquility; Emotion as a moment that exists in space and time; Emotion that is conflicting; Fluidity of affect.

02 editing

I divided my film into two halves. There was the video element and the sound element. The video created moments in time. The composition of the video interpreted and expressed an emotional context. I explored various forms of composition, lighting and editing techniques like monochromatic film, slow-motion, and different types of cuts like jump cuts, match cuts etc.

On the other hand, sound created a link between these video-moments. Making the audience feel like they were traveling through time. I spent a lot of time trying to find the right sound piece for this video. I wanted the sound to be dreamy and melodic but with a hint of longing. I experimented with phasing the sound for a heightened airy effect.
